Built in 1910, the Heibel/March Drug Store on the corner of Rangeline & Wilkes quickly became a vital part of the young community. Not only did the store sell basic commodities, they provided countless young people with their first jobs. The building was a meeting place: The “Corner” of the community. Deemed a notable historic property in 2005, the Corner Action Committee has high hopes to make the building as symbolic to the community as it was 100 years ago.
The Heibel/March building in North Central Columbia will be the home of the new community center, The Corner. This building will serve the surrounding community and Field Elementary school. The Neighborhood Resource Center will house a number of valuable resources and activities for children and adults including: Job training, academic tutoring, a large hall for art exhibits, rehearsal and performance space, meeting rooms, computers, and technical training.
The Corner will be a safe and warm place for children and adults to learn and grow. It will be a place of art, music, and creative inspirations. Purpose/Goals: The Corner will provide a safe, warm, creative and educational environment through the renovation of a historic building |
